Mike’s message

24 April 2024

I am sure that many of you reading this will have a similar sentiment …..”where did the first 3 months of 2024 disappear to”.

It seems like a very short time ago that we were returning to work after welcoming in the New Year. That first quarter of 2024 here at Marina Projects has been extremely busy and consumed by an array of varied activity including delivery of dredging projects and an extensive range of marina-related capital schemes for our domestic clients; as well as undertaking market studies, feasibility assessment and master planning work on an exciting range of international projects.

Mike Ward, Marina Projects

I am struck by the difference between our domestic and international work and what this says about the journey Marina Projects has been on. In recent years there has been a marked shift in the extent to which the major marina operators and prime marinas in the UK have adopted MPL, as the “go-to” provider of specialist services. Indeed, a client remarked to me recently that “you have the UK market well covered”. In the sense that we are retained by Premier Marinas, Marina Developments Ltd, Yacht Havens Group, Berthon in Lymington, Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour, there may be some truth in that assessment. The endorsement of Marina Projects that arises from the established UK market is notable and hugely appreciated.

At the same time, the international reach of our consultancy services continues to grow, and we have been extensively involved in many exciting and potentially groundbreaking marina developments across the world. But this international work is less obvious, due to non-disclosure agreements. A very good illustration is the Middle East, where for example we have undertaken numerous commissions, including for the mega-projects in the Red Sea. We have been working on the Amaala projects with Red Sea Global since 2018, also on several of the NEOM projects, and many other projects in and around Jeddah. The opportunities for this region and the wider Middle East are very significant and it will be interesting to see how the sector develops.

Accordingly, promoting ourselves to the international development community needs more thought and that in part has led to our rebrand, which takes a further step forward this month, with the launch of our new website.

Finally, our range of domestic and international work cannot be delivered without the full involvement of the team, and I am excited that our staff feature in our Spring 24 newsletter introduces one of our Project Managers, Sarah Dalley.
