Managing the £2.2million MDL Ocean Village pontoon upgrade
6 September 2024
Marina Projects service management agreement with MDL has seen our team undertake the pontoon upgrade which is part of a £2.2m investment in the flagship Ocean Village Marina, located in Southampton. This substantial funding has included the recent installation of all-new pontoons and the introduction of innovative smart technology.
Marina Projects managed all aspects of the piling, pontoon and services installation, working with both the client MDL and the contractor by sequencing the works to ensure minimal disruption for berth holders and large-scale events hosted at Ocean Village during the project. Marina Projects provided a design review of the pontoons & services, working with MDL to assess and optimise the customer requirements, introducing a greater number of large berths in response to market demand and to support future growth. The project started in the middle of October 2023 and was completed in phases throughout May & June.
The new installation at Ocean Village Marina provides berth holders and visitors with concrete superyacht pontoons, which can accommodate vessels between 25m & 50m in length and have a higher (750mm) freeboard than standard pontoons providing customers with a premium berthing product which aligns with the freeboard of these larger yachts and sits more comfortably in terms of mooring lines, fenders and access arrangements. In addition to the new pontoons, new decking and smart meters have been installed across the marina. These meters provide customers with complete control of their electricity accounts, offering 24/7 access for online payments and automatic notifications of any interruptions to their power supply. The removal of pontoon services, supply and install of new utilities equipment was overseen by Marina Projects and undertaken by UK pedestal manufacturer Sureline Electrical Modules Ltd.
The concrete pontoons were installed by Walcon Marine Ltd. and designed & fabricated by Irish specialist pontoon contractor Inland & Coastal Marina Systems Ltd. Walcon Marine Ltd. completed the piling & pontoon construction works, including the demolition and removal of existing pontoons and installation of a select number of new piles & pontoons. The old pontoons and floats were reused or recycled. UK composite manufacturer Dura Composites Ltd. installed ‘Micro Mesh’ deck board in the unique ‘MDL charcoal grey’ to retain continuity of design with the northside of the marina.
Our commitment to investing in our marinas is crucial to ensure we are always delivering the highest level of excellence that our berth holders, visitors and tenants have come to expect.
Lauren McCann, Manager, Ocean Village Marina
the new installation provides Ocean Village Marina customers with high-quality, upgraded berthing pontoons that are aligned to this iconic urban marina setting, to include a number of new, dedicated superyacht berths at the heart of the central Solent.
It has been a pleasure to work with Lauren and the MDL team at Ocean Village. We are very pleased to have had the opportunity to be part of this market leading development.
